Private property: usually no permit
In Fort Wayne, removing a tree that’s entirely on your own private property generally does not require a city permit. You own the tree; you can have it removed. This covers the large majority of homeowner removals.
The big exception: right-of-way & street trees
Trees in the public right-of-way, the strip between the sidewalk and the street, and street trees, are regulated by the City of Fort Wayne. Removing or significantly pruning these typically requires city approval, and the city forestry division may be involved. Never assume a tree near the curb is yours to cut.
Other municipalities have their own rules
New Haven, Huntertown, and the surrounding towns each set their own ordinances, and they differ. If you’re outside Fort Wayne city limits, check with your municipality. We confirm the rules for your specific address before any work begins.
HOAs, easements & protected situations
Even when the city doesn’t require a permit, your HOA might, and utility easements or drainage easements can restrict what’s done near them. Trees involved in a property-line dispute are a separate matter, see our guide on neighbor tree disputes in Indiana.
Why this matters for Fort Wayne trees
Our crews see a lot of oak, maple, ash, silver maple on local properties, each behaves differently when it comes down. Northeast Indiana weather is hard on trees: heavy summer thunderstorms & straight-line wind, winter ice & snow load, spring storm damage all take their toll over a season. Our heavy heavy Indiana clay, three rivers, and the run of Emerald Ash Borer through the area all shape how local trees grow, fail, and need care. A general rule from a national article often does not match what is true for a silver maple on a Fort Wayne riverbank lot, which is why local, on-the-ground judgment matters.
When to handle it yourself, and when to call a pro
Small, ground-level tasks well away from structures and power lines are often fine for a careful homeowner. Anything involving climbing, large limbs, dead or leaning trees, or work near the house or a power line should go to an insured professional, the risk and the liability are simply not worth it. EAB has killed a large share of Fort Wayne's ash trees — dead-ash removal is a major local need.
