Dormant season is best for most trees
Late winter, while trees are dormant and leafless, is the ideal window for most pruning in northeast Indiana. Cuts seal quickly once spring growth starts, you can clearly see the tree's structure without leaves, and there is less stress on the tree. It is the default we recommend for routine structural pruning.
Species and timing exceptions
- Oaks, avoid pruning in the warm months when possible to reduce oak wilt risk, see oak wilt
- Spring-flowering trees (like ornamental pear or redbud), prune right after they bloom so you do not cut off next year’s flowers
- Maples and birches, "bleed" sap if pruned in late winter; harmless but prune in summer if it bothers you
- Dead, broken, or hazardous limbs, remove any time, immediately
How much to remove
Never take more than about 15-25% of the live canopy in a single season. Over-thinning, especially the "lion-tailing" that strips interior growth, stresses the tree and is a hallmark of untrained crews. Good pruning is conservative and purposeful.
Why this matters for Fort Wayne trees
Northeast Indiana weather is hard on trees: heavy summer thunderstorms & straight-line wind, winter ice & snow load, spring storm damage all take their toll over a season. Fort Wayne is the 'City of Three Rivers' — riverbank lots mean soft soil and storm-prone mature trees. Our heavy heavy Indiana clay, three rivers, and the run of Emerald Ash Borer through the area all shape how local trees grow, fail, and need care. A general rule from a national article often does not match what is true for a silver maple on a Fort Wayne riverbank lot, which is why local, on-the-ground judgment matters.
When to handle it yourself, and when to call a pro
Small, ground-level tasks well away from structures and power lines are often fine for a careful homeowner. Anything involving climbing, large limbs, dead or leaning trees, or work near the house or a power line should go to an insured professional, the risk and the liability are simply not worth it. EAB has killed a large share of Fort Wayne's ash trees — dead-ash removal is a major local need.
